Savonlinna

Savonlinna is a town in eastern Finland, set within the Greater Saimaa Lake district, the country's largest lake system. Built across several islands connected by bridges, the town is best known for Olavinlinna Castle, a well-preserved 15th-century medieval fortress standing on a rocky islet that dominates the townscape and ranks among the finest surviving castles in Scandinavia. Each summer, the castle hosts the Savonlinna Opera Festival, a major cultural event drawing visitors from across Europe. The town makes the most of its lakeside setting, offering opportunities for boating, fishing and cruises on Lake Saimaa, including trips aboard vintage steamships that recall the region's industrial and trading history. The humid continental climate brings mild, bright summers well suited to outdoor pursuits, and cold, snowy winters ideal for cross-country skiing and exploring the frozen lake. Savonlinna also serves as a convenient base for discovering the surrounding archipelagos and forests of the Saimaa region.
