Rantasalmi

Rantasalmi is a small municipality in the South Savo region of Finland, set on the shores of Lake Haukivesi, one of the major basins within the Saimaa lake system. The area is best known as the gateway to Linnansaari National Park, an unspoilt archipelago that is home to the endangered Saimaa ringed seal, a species found nowhere else in the world. The surrounding countryside is typical of Finland's lake district, offering plenty of scope for boating, fishing, canoeing and hiking in summer, along with cross-country skiing and ice fishing during the winter months. The nearby Kolovesi National Park, also reachable from Rantasalmi, adds further appeal with its rocky cliffs and caves. The municipality retains a distinctly rural character, with an economy based on agriculture and forestry, and offers numerous lakeside cottages (mökki) for rent, a traditional form of accommodation widely favoured across this part of the country. The continental climate brings cold, snowy winters and mild summers with long daylight hours, making it a pleasant base for exploring the surrounding lake and forest landscapes.
