Puumala

Puumala is a small rural municipality in Finland, located in the South Savo region at the heart of the Lake Saimaa archipelago, the country's largest lake. The town straddles the Puumalansalmi strait, spanned by a road bridge connecting the two shores of the lake. This setting makes Puumala a notable waypoint for exploring the typical lakeland scenery of the region, characterised by forests, wooded islands and still waters. The area is home to the Saimaa ringed seal, an endangered species found only here, occasionally spotted during guided boat trips. Outdoor activities are plentiful: boating, fishing, swimming and hiking in summer; cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing in winter. The area features numerous traditional Finnish cottages (mökki), often equipped with lakeside saunas, popular for peaceful, nature-focused stays. Puumala remains a low-key destination, away from major tourist routes, valued for its authenticity and unspoilt natural surroundings, typical of Finland's lake district.
