Mikkeli

Mikkeli is a town in south-eastern Finland, the administrative centre of the South Savo region, set on the shores of Lake Saimaa, the country's largest lake system. Its military history is notable for having served as Field Marshal Mannerheim's headquarters during the Second World War, a legacy preserved in a dedicated museum as well as a cavalry museum, reflecting the town's strategic importance during the conflicts of the twentieth century. The town centre features a neo-Gothic stone cathedral, a distinctive architectural landmark. The surrounding landscape, shaped by lakes, forests and numerous islands, lends itself to activities such as boating, fishing, nature walks and traditional sauna bathing, all deeply rooted in local culture. The region has a continental climate, with long, snowy winters well suited to winter sports, and short, mild summers favoured for outdoor life. Mikkeli therefore offers a destination combining modest historical heritage with the classic natural setting of Finland's lake district.
