Kontiolahti

Kontiolahti is a municipality in the North Karelia region of Finland, located close to Joensuu. It is best known for its biathlon stadium, which regularly hosts IBU World Cup events, drawing competitors and spectators from across Europe each winter. The municipality borders Lake Höytiäinen, a large body of water well suited to fishing, summer swimming and other water-based activities. The surrounding countryside offers numerous forest trails, particularly around the Jeronsalo area, popular for hiking, cross-country skiing and observing typical boreal woodland. The climate is continental, with long, snowy winters that favour winter sports, and short but bright summers thanks to the clear northern nights. Kontiolahti remains a peaceful destination, geared more towards nature and sport than urban tourism, offering an authentic setting in which to experience rural Finnish life and the characteristic landscapes of North Karelia.
