Vielsalm

Vielsalm is a municipality in the province of Luxembourg, in Wallonia, at the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Crossed by the River Salm, it spans a largely wooded and hilly landscape, well suited to walking, mountain biking and fishing. The town is known for its Laetare carnival, linked to the legend of the Macralle (witch), commemorated by a statue on Vieux Château hill, which offers views over the valley. Nearby lies the Baraque de Fraiture, the highest point in the Belgian Ardennes, popular for cross-country skiing in winter and countryside walks throughout the rest of the year. Surrounding villages such as Salmchâteau and Grand-Halleux add to the quiet, rural character of the area, which is geared towards green tourism and outdoor pursuits. The cool, damp climate typical of the Ardennes supports extensive conifer forests and pastureland. Vielsalm therefore makes a practical base for exploring the Ardennes countryside, combining local heritage, folk traditions and well-marked walking trails.
