Læsø

Læsø is a Danish island in the Kattegat, off the coast of Frederikshavn, reached by ferry from the mainland. It is best known for its traditional houses with dried seaweed roofs, a unique building technique found nowhere else in Europe, with well-preserved examples still visible around the village of Byrum. The island also has a long history of salt production, an activity that continues today on a small scale and can be explored at a reconstructed saltworks near the coast. The ferry port of Vesterø Havn serves as the main arrival point and hub of local life, with a handful of shops and restaurants. The rest of the island is flat and largely rural, ideal for cycling, with pine forests, dunes and long sandy beaches along the Kattegat shoreline. Læsø appeals to visitors seeking peace, unspoilt nature and a distinctive rural heritage, offering a quieter alternative to Denmark's more popular seaside resorts.
