Rømø

Rømø is a Danish island in the Wadden Sea, linked to the mainland by a causeway near Skærbæk in southern Jutland. It is known for its exceptionally wide sandy beach, one of the broadest in Europe, where cars, sand yachts and horse riders share the shore, particularly around Lakolk and Sønderstrand. At low tide, extensive mudflats are exposed, ideal for guided Wadden Sea walks and spotting seals and migratory birds, as the island lies within the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park. The village of Kongsmark is home to Rømø Church, notable for its fence made of whale jawbones, a reminder of the island's whaling past, alongside former sea captains' farmhouses (Kommandørgårde) now open as museums. To the south, the harbour town of Havneby serves as a base for fishing boats and the ferry connection to the German island of Sylt. Wooded dunes and heathland provide further walking and cycling routes. Popular for its holiday cottages and campsites, Rømø draws both beach sports enthusiasts and those interested in nature and birdwatching.
