Aleria

Aleria lies on the eastern coast of Haute-Corse, at the mouth of the Tavignano river, alongside the Étang de Diane, well known for its oyster and mussel farming. The town is chiefly noted for its ancient heritage: originally founded by the Greeks and later developed by the Romans, it retains archaeological remains near Fort Matra, which houses the Jérôme Carcopino departmental museum displaying finds from local excavations. The surrounding eastern plain, one of Corsica's main agricultural areas, is characterised by vineyards and fruit orchards. The long sandy beaches along the Tyrrhenian Sea provide a natural setting popular for swimming and water sports, in a still largely unspoilt landscape. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, draws visitors mainly during the summer months while keeping the area quiet the rest of the year. Aleria therefore offers a blend of historical interest, natural surroundings and local produce, particularly the oysters and mussels from the Étang de Diane, much appreciated by fans of Corsican cuisine.
