Porquerolles

Porquerolles is the largest of the Hyères Islands, off the coast of the Var department, reachable by boat from La Tour Fondue (on the Giens peninsula) or from Hyères and Toulon. The island forms part of the Port-Cros National Park and stands out for its unspoilt natural surroundings, with pine woods, vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean scrub lining walking trails and cycle paths — the main way of getting around, as cars are largely banned. The central village, built around a plane tree-lined square, hosts shops, restaurants and bicycle hire outlets. Notable sites include Fort Sainte-Agathe, overlooking the harbour and housing an exhibition on the island's heritage, along with well-known beaches such as Plage Notre-Dame, with its turquoise waters, and Plage d'Argent, closer to the village. The Mediterranean National Botanical Conservatory occupies part of the island and includes a garden open to visitors. The atmosphere remains quiet outside the summer season, when visitor numbers rise considerably. The Mediterranean climate, rocky coves and sea views make it a popular choice for both day trips and longer stays.
