Bergheim

Bergheim is a wine-growing village in the Haut-Rhin department, set in the heart of Alsace's vineyards along the Route des Vins. It is known for its remarkably well-preserved medieval fortifications, including ramparts, towers and gated entrances, most notably the Porte Haute marking the village entrance. The cobbled lanes lined with traditional half-timbered houses give the old centre an authentic character, complemented by fountains and an old lime tree listed as a notable tree. The village is surrounded by vineyards producing Alsace wines, with several estates offering tastings and cellar visits. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring neighbouring villages such as Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, as well as the town of Colmar around twenty kilometres away. The area enjoys a semi-continental climate, drier than the rest of Alsace thanks to the shelter of the Vosges mountains, which favours viticulture. The surrounding countryside also offers walking trails through the vine-covered hills and towards the Vosges foothills, with views over the Alsace plain. Local crafts and regional gastronomy, marked by traditional Alsatian specialities, add further interest to this rural, heritage-rich destination.
