Pyla-sur-Mer

Pyla-sur-Mer is a seaside resort on the Bassin d'Arcachon in the Gironde department, best known for the Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, which rises above the surrounding pine forest and offers views over the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The village, tucked between woodland and shoreline, features residential areas with villas in a traditional seaside style, often set among greenery, alongside sheltered beaches such as Plage de la Salie and the calmer bay-side beaches. Its proximity to Arcachon makes it easy to visit oyster markets and traditional oyster huts dotted around the bay, as well as to take boat trips out to the Banc d'Arguin sandbank. The area is popular for climbing the dune, water sports such as surfing on the ocean side and paddleboarding on the bay side, and cycling along routes through the Landes pine forest. The mild oceanic climate makes spring and autumn pleasant times to visit, while summer draws larger crowds to the dune and beaches. Pyla-sur-Mer remains a convenient base for exploring the Bassin d'Arcachon and its well-preserved natural surroundings.
