St-Louis la Reunion

St-Louis la Reunion is a town in the south-west of the island, set between the Indian Ocean and the foothills leading up to the Cirque de Cilaos. The town grew up around sugar cane cultivation, an activity still visible across the surrounding agricultural landscape. The Rhumerie du Gol, one of the island's principal rum distilleries, is based here and reflects this long-standing sugar and rum-making tradition. The Domaine du Gol, a former sugar estate, retains buildings dating from the colonial era. The town also serves as a gateway to the Cirque de Cilaos, with a winding road through the Rivière Saint-Étienne gorges offering views over the island's volcanic terrain. The coastline features black sand beaches, typical of Reunion's leeward side, which is drier and sunnier than the east. The tropical climate, with a marked dry season from April to November, supports outdoor activities year-round. St-Louis remains a relatively authentic destination, away from the busier tourist areas, well suited to exploring Reunion's agricultural and industrial heritage.
