Olgiasca

Olgiasca is a small hamlet within the municipality of Colico, in Lombardy, set on a peninsula that juts into the northern end of Lake Como. The area is best known for Piona Abbey, a medieval Cistercian monastery with a Romanesque cloister and surrounding olive groves, reachable on foot or by boat from the nearby shores. Its position at the top of the lake makes Olgiasca a favourite spot for water sports enthusiasts, as steady thermal winds—known locally as the Breva and Tivano—draw windsurfers and sailors throughout much of the year. The scenery combines calm waters with wooded slopes and nearby peaks such as Monte Legnone and the Grigne range, offering plenty of scope for hillwalking. The setting remains rural and largely undeveloped, with scattered houses and footpaths linking the hamlet to the neighbouring villages of Colico and Dorio. The climate follows the typical pre-Alpine lake pattern, with mild, breezy summers and cooler winters. Altogether, Olgiasca makes a peaceful base for exploring the northern shore of Lake Como, combining natural surroundings, religious heritage and outdoor pursuits.
