Lierna

Lierna is a village on Lake Como, set on the eastern shore between Varenna and Mandello del Lario, within the province of Lecco. The settlement is made up of two historic parts, Lierna Olivedo and Lierna Castello, the latter retaining the remains of a medieval fortress overlooking the lake. The waterfront features several small pebble beaches and designated swimming areas, along with ferry connections to Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio, making it easy to explore the other lakeside villages. Behind the village rise the Grigna mountains, popular with hikers and climbers, with trails leading to mountain huts and viewpoints over the lake. Local cuisine reflects Lombard lake traditions, particularly missoltini, a dried freshwater fish typical of the area, alongside polenta and risotto. The lake's moderating effect on the climate supports water-based activities such as sailing, kayaking and diving during the summer months. Lierna remains a quieter alternative to some of its more touristic neighbours, while still offering straightforward access to the main attractions around Lake Como.
