Malcesine

Malcesine is a small town in the province of Verona, in the Veneto region, set on the eastern shore of Lake Garda at the foot of Monte Baldo. Its historic centre, with steep, narrow lanes, is built around the Castello Scaligero, a 13th-century fortress overlooking the harbour with sweeping views across the lake; the German writer Goethe stayed here briefly in 1786, an episode recorded in his Italian Journey. From the town centre, a rotating cable car climbs to the summit of Monte Baldo, a starting point for hiking trails and paragliding flights. The harbour serves ferries connecting other towns around the lake, alongside private boats. Thanks to its steady winds (the Ora and Pelèr), Malcesine is also well known for sailing and windsurfing. The town has several lidos and beaches, restaurants serving lake-based cuisine, and small shops lining its cobbled streets. The mild, lake-tempered Mediterranean climate supports olive groves and citrus trees in the surrounding countryside. The destination appeals both to water sports enthusiasts and to visitors seeking historic architecture combined with alpine and lakeside scenery.
