Toscolano

Toscolano forms part of the municipality of Toscolano Maderno, on the western shore of Lake Garda in the Brescia province of Lombardy. The village stretches between the lakefront and the hills behind, home to the Valle delle Cartiere, renowned for its papermaking history dating back to the Middle Ages, now recounted at the Museo della Carta housed in a former paper mill. The lakeside promenade is pleasant for strolling, with pebble beaches and ferry connections to Torri del Benaco and other towns on the eastern shore. The surrounding hills are covered with olive groves producing a well-regarded local oil, while the mild climate also supports citrus cultivation, a legacy of the old lemon houses. Neighbouring Maderno has a notable Romanesque church worth a visit. The area is well suited to watersports such as sailing and windsurfing, as well as hiking towards Monte Baldo, visible across the lake. Altogether, Toscolano makes a quiet base for exploring Lake Garda, combining industrial heritage, lakeside scenery and a hilly hinterland.
