Port Leucate

Port Leucate is a seaside resort on the Aude coastline, built during the 1960s and 1970s as part of the tourist development of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, featuring the distinctive stepped and pyramid-shaped residential architecture typical of that era, set around a large marina. The resort lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the Leucate lagoon, an inland stretch of water especially popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to the Tramontane, a steady wind common to the area. Long sandy beaches line the seafront and are ideal for swimming during the summer months. Nearby, the village of Leucate is well worth a visit for its cliff, which offers sweeping views over the sea and surrounding lagoons, as well as its harbour, where fishing boats and pleasure craft share a more traditional atmosphere than the modern resort itself. The marina at Port Leucate is pleasant for a stroll, lined with shops and waterside restaurants. The wider area also allows for day trips to Perpignan, Narbonne, or the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, all within an hour's drive.
