San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a small medieval town in Tuscany, in the province of Siena, renowned for its stone towers dating from the 13th century that still rise above the rolling hills of the Val d'Elsa. Often nicknamed the 'Medieval Manhattan', the town once had around sixty such towers, of which about fifteen survive today, including the Torre Grossa, the tallest, which is open to visitors. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is centred around Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, home to the Collegiata, a church notable for its richly decorated frescoes. The town is also known for its wine production, particularly Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a DOCG white wine typical of the area, as well as for locally grown saffron. The surrounding countryside offers classic Tuscan scenery, with vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees. Easily reached from Siena or Florence, the town draws visitors year-round for its well-preserved architecture, cobbled streets and artisan shops, while retaining its authentic character.
