Portoferraio

Portoferraio is the main town and administrative centre of the island of Elba, in Tuscany, known for its historic harbour and fortifications. The old town, built on a headland, is dominated by Forte Falcone and Forte Stella, constructed in the 16th century under Medici rule to defend the city against Ottoman raids. The Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon Bonaparte's residence during his exile on the island in 1814-1815, is one of the town's key historic sites and can now be visited as a museum. The lively harbour welcomes ferries and pleasure craft, linking Portoferraio to mainland Italy, particularly Piombino. Picturesque narrow streets lined with colourful houses lead to charming squares filled with shops and restaurants serving Tuscan cuisine and seafood specialities. The surrounding area offers sandy beaches and rocky coves, popular for swimming and diving, along with coastal paths that reveal the island's unspoilt natural scenery. Portoferraio enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers that make it well suited to seaside tourism from May to September.
