Grimstad

Grimstad is a small coastal town in southern Norway, in Agder county, known for its historic centre of white wooden houses dating largely from the 19th century, clustered around a lively harbour. The town retains strong maritime traditions rooted in its shipbuilding past, and the nearby archipelago offers numerous islands and skerries accessible by boat, ideal for swimming, sailing and fishing in summer. Grimstad is also notable as the place where the young Henrik Ibsen worked as an apprentice pharmacist before becoming a playwright; a house museum commemorates his time there. The presence of a campus belonging to the University of Agder gives the town a significant student population, adding to local life for much of the year. The surrounding area, with its rocky coves and woodland, is well suited to walking and coastal rambles. The climate is tempered by the sea, bringing mild, bright summers and comparatively cool winters for the latitude. Grimstad makes a pleasant base for exploring Norway's southern coast, situated between Arendal and Lillesand.
