Geilo

Geilo is a Norwegian mountain resort located in the municipality of Hol, in the Viken region, roughly halfway between Oslo and Bergen on the scenic Bergensbanen railway line. Sitting at around 800 metres above sea level, it enjoys a mountain climate well suited to winter sports, with numerous alpine ski runs and an extensive network of cross-country trails maintained throughout the winter season. Its proximity to Hallingskarvet National Park also makes it a popular starting point for hiking and nature watching during the summer months. The area offers a range of activities such as fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, and seasonal excursions by dog sledge or snowmobile. Geilo is well known as a family-friendly destination, with facilities catering to both beginners and experienced skiers alike. The village itself remains modest in size, built around shops, restaurants and accommodation geared towards sports tourism. Its easy accessibility by train from Norway's two largest cities makes it a convenient stop for exploring the country's mountainous landscapes without the need for a long car journey.
