Balestrate

Balestrate is a small coastal town in Sicily, located in the province of Palermo, on the Gulf of Castellammare. The village stretches along a long, fine sandy beach, which is its main tourist attraction, appreciated for its calm, shallow waters well suited to families. Traditionally reliant on fishing, Balestrate still has a small harbour that remains active in local life, particularly through the sale of fresh fish. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, makes the seaside season run from May to September. The modest town centre offers a handful of shops, restaurants and typical bars serving Sicilian cuisine based on seafood. Balestrate lies close to better-known spots on Sicily's north-western coast, such as Castellammare del Golfo and Alcamo, making it easy to take day trips to unspoilt natural landscapes and historic villages. The surrounding countryside is also known for its vineyards and olive groves, characteristic of Sicily's rural hinterland.
