Nexø

Nexø is a small harbour town on the south-eastern coast of the Danish island of Bornholm. Traditionally centred on fishing, it retains an active port where traditional boats still moor, surrounded by the colourful house façades typical of the island's architecture. The town is known as the birthplace of the writer Martin Andersen Nexø, who took his pen name from the locality; a museum dedicated to him is housed in the former town hall. The surrounding coastline is varied, combining rocky cliffs with fine sandy beaches, including those at nearby Dueodde, well known for their pale, fine sand. Bornholm enjoys more sunshine than the Danish average, making it a popular spot for walking and cycling, with the island offering an extensive network of cycle paths. Local cuisine focuses on smoked fish, particularly herring, prepared using traditional methods in the smokehouses characteristic of the region. Nexø therefore serves as a convenient base for exploring southern Bornholm, combining maritime heritage, coastal nature and local produce.
