Balestrand

Balestrand is a Norwegian village on the northern shore of the Sognefjord, in Vestland county, within the Sogn district. Since the late 19th century it has been known as a holiday destination, having attracted Norwegian painters as well as German Emperor Wilhelm II, whose visits left visible traces in the village, including statues inspired by the saga of Frithjof the Bold near the shoreline. The village is also home to St Olav's Church, a wooden Anglo-Norwegian style building constructed in the 19th century at the initiative of British residents, along with the historic Kviknes Hotel, a traditional timber building overlooking the fjord. Balestrand serves as a convenient base for exploring the Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord, and for reaching the Fjærland valley, known for its proximity to the Jostedalsbreen glacier and its dedicated glacier museum. The climate is temperate oceanic, with mild summers and comparatively gentle winters for the latitude. The surrounding area is well suited to hiking, boat excursions and taking in the mountain and water scenery typical of Norway's fjord landscapes.
