Jachymov

Jáchymov is a small spa town nestled in the Ore Mountains of Western Bohemia, close to the German border and not far from Karlovy Vary. Founded in the 16th century thanks to rich silver deposits, the town later experienced a second industrial era through uranium and radium mining, with Marie Curie's research contributing to its scientific reputation. Today, Jáchymov is best known for its naturally radioactive thermal springs, used in several specialised spa facilities for treating joint and muscular conditions. The historic centre retains traces of this dual mining and spa heritage, including a few period buildings and a museum dedicated to the town's industrial past. The surrounding wooded, hilly landscape offers good hiking opportunities in summer, while winter visitors can make use of nearby ski resorts, notably Klínovec, the highest peak in the Ore Mountains. Jáchymov therefore serves as a peaceful base for exploring a distinctive industrial heritage while enjoying unspoilt natural surroundings and well-established spa facilities.
