Bareges

Barèges, a spa town and winter sports resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées, sits in the Bastan valley at the foot of the Col du Tourmalet. It makes an excellent base for summer hiking as well as winter skiing. Walkers particularly enjoy the climb up to the Lac Bleu and the Lac d'Oncet, which lead to altitudes where patches of snow remain even in summer; the more energetic continue on foot to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre observatory rather than taking the cable car. Barèges' own thermal pool is a welcome stop after a day's exertion. Nearby, several major Pyrenean landmarks can be reached by car or on foot: the Cirque de Gavarnie, Lac de Gaube, Pont d'Espagne, and the Aspin and Luz-Ardiden mountain passes, each offering distinctive views over the range. For dining, head to Luz-Saint-Sauveur, where a restaurant championing local produce is known for its spit-roasted dessert. For cheese, the Ferme du Bergons is well worth a visit.
