Fonyód

Fonyód is a lakeside resort town on the southern shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary, within Somogy county. The town spreads across several hills that offer open views over the lake and, on clear days, towards Badacsony hill on the opposite shore. Fonyód has a number of public beaches with designated swimming areas, well suited to swimming, sailing and other water sports during the summer season. Its harbour accommodates pleasure boats as well as ferry connections to Badacsonytomaj, providing an easy way to cross the lake. The railway station links the town to Budapest and other Balaton resorts, making it a convenient base for both short breaks and longer stays. The surrounding countryside is well suited to walking and cycling, with routes running along the lakeshore or through the vineyard-covered hills typical of the region. Local cuisine draws on traditional Hungarian dishes, with Balaton fish frequently featured on menus in nearby restaurants. Fonyód remains a popular choice for a relaxed holiday combining nature, water-based activities and the chance to explore the wine-growing heritage of the Balaton region.
