Lahnstein

Lahnstein is a small town in Rhineland-Palatinate, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Lahn rivers, close to Koblenz. It was formed by the merger of two former settlements, Oberlahnstein and Niederlahnstein, which explains the presence of two distinct historic centres. Notable heritage sites include Lahneck Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the valley, and the Martinsburg, a former residence of the Electors of Mainz. The town lies within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, renowned for its vineyard landscapes, steep cliffs and castles dotted along the river. This setting makes the area well suited to walking and cycling, with routes running alongside both the Rhine and the Lahn. River cruises also offer an alternative way to explore the surrounding landscape. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and relatively cool winters typical of the Rhine valley. Lahnstein therefore serves as a convenient base for exploring the Koblenz region and its wine-growing surroundings.
