Grossschönau

Großschönau is a municipality in Saxony, located in the Görlitz district within Upper Lusatia (Oberlausitz), close to the border with the Czech Republic. The town is known for its textile heritage, particularly damask weaving, a tradition dating back to weavers who settled here from the 17th century onwards. The local Textile Museum, housed in a traditional half-timbered weaver's cottage typical of the region, documents this industrial and craft history. Großschönau lies along the tourist route dedicated to Umgebindehaus buildings, distinctive timber-and-stone dwellings found across Upper Lusatia, northern Bohemia and Lower Silesia. The surrounding rural, hilly landscape is well suited to walking and cycling, with convenient access to the nearby Zittau Mountains, popular for their rock formations and waymarked trails. Its proximity to both Poland and the Czech Republic makes it a practical base for cross-border day trips. The temperate continental climate brings mild summers and cool winters, making the area suitable for nature-based stays throughout the year.
