Ribnitz-Damgarten

Ribnitz-Damgarten, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is known as the 'amber town' (Bernsteinstadt) thanks to its long-standing tradition of working amber washed up along the Baltic coast. The Deutsches Bernsteinmuseum, housed in the town's former castle, showcases this heritage through a collection of both raw and crafted pieces. Formed in 1950 through the merger of Ribnitz and Damgarten, the town is crossed by the River Recknitz and sits alongside the Ribnitzer See, an arm of the Saaler Bodden lagoon that connects it to the Baltic Sea. Its marina makes it a popular starting point for exploring the coastal lagoons and reaching the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, known for its beaches and unspoilt natural scenery. The historic centre retains several buildings reflecting the region's Hanseatic and craft traditions. The climate is typical of the Baltic coastline, with mild summers and cool, windy winters. The town serves as a peaceful base for nature-focused stays, cycling along the Bodden lagoons, and discovering the local amber heritage.
