Detmold

Detmold is a town in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, nestled within the Teutoburg Forest in the historic region of Lippe. The town is particularly known for its Residenzschloss, the historic residence of the Princes of Lippe, as well as the Hermann Monument (Hermannsdenkmal), an imposing statue on a wooded hill nearby commemorating the victory of Germanic tribes over Roman legions in AD 9. Detmold is also home to Germany's largest open-air museum, the Freilichtmuseum, which showcases regional historic buildings and traditional craft demonstrations. The town is further recognised for its academy of music, the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, one of Germany's most prominent. The surrounding countryside, characterised by the wooded hills of the Teutoburg Forest, offers plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling. The historic town centre retains half-timbered houses typical of the Westphalia region. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cool winters, typical of north-western Germany.
