Wroclaw

Wrocław, in south-western Poland's Lower Silesia region, is a city crossed by the Oder River, whose numerous branches and bridges have earned it the occasional nickname of the 'Polish Venice'. The historic centre is built around the Rynek, a large market square lined with colourful townhouses and dominated by a Gothic town hall. Nearby, Ostrów Tumski island, the city's birthplace, houses St John the Baptist Cathedral and a network of cobbled lanes still lit in the evening by manually operated gas lamps. The city is known for its hundreds of small bronze dwarf statues (krasnale) scattered throughout the streets, which have become a popular scavenger hunt for visitors. The Centennial Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases early 20th-century reinforced concrete architecture and stands close to the Multimedia Fountain. The University of Wrocław, with its Baroque Aula Leopoldina, also shapes the cityscape. Local cuisine highlights Silesian specialities such as kluski śląskie dumplings and pierogi. The climate is temperate continental, with mild summers and cool winters.
