Plougonvelin

Plougonvelin lies at the tip of Finistère, close to Brest, on the Saint-Mathieu peninsula. The town is best known for the emblematic site of Pointe Saint-Mathieu, where the ruins of an old abbey stand alongside a still-operating lighthouse and a semaphore station, offering sweeping views over the Goulet de Brest and the Atlantic Ocean. Fort de Bertheaume, built on a rocky islet connected to the mainland, is another well-regarded stop, notable for its defensive architecture and views over the surrounding cliffs. The area is well suited to walking along the coastal path (GR34), which winds through heathland and rocky shoreline typical of the Breton coast. For a meal, the restaurant La Cabane, conveniently located and known for its warm welcome, makes for a practical stop after visiting the lighthouse or the fort.
