Greve in Chianti

Greve in Chianti lies at the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region, between Florence and Siena, along the scenic SR222 road known as the Chiantigiana. Its historic centre is built around the triangular Piazza Matteotti, lined with porticoes and colourful buildings, where a statue of the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, born nearby, stands prominently. The surrounding hillside landscape, covered in vineyards and olive groves, reflects the Chianti Classico terroir, recognisable by its black rooster emblem. Every September, the town hosts the Expo del Chianti Classico, a fair dedicated to local wines, while a weekly market takes place on Saturdays in the main square. Nearby, the medieval hamlet of Montefioralle, with its stone lanes and fortified walls, offers a glimpse of traditional Tuscan architecture. The area is well suited to hillside walking, vineyard visits and sampling regional produce, particularly the artisan cured meats for which Greve is well known. The Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers, supports vine and olive cultivation throughout the year, making the surrounding countryside a lasting feature of local life.
