Opatija/Matulji

Opatija and Matulji together form part of the Kvarner coastline, nestled at the foot of Mount Učka in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county of Croatia. Opatija, a former Austro-Hungarian spa resort, is known for its seafront promenade, the Lungomare, which stretches for around twelve kilometres connecting neighbouring towns such as Volosko, Ičići and Lovran. The town retains a rich architectural heritage of Belle Époque villas and hotels, along with gardens planted with Mediterranean species, including camellias that have become something of a local emblem. Matulji, a smaller, more rural municipality further inland, often serves as a gateway to the motorway and the Istrian hinterland. The area enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and relatively gentle winters thanks to the shelter provided by the Učka massif. Nearby attractions include hiking routes up Učka, day trips to the city of Rijeka, and various water-based activities along the coast. Local cuisine draws on fresh seafood as well as Istrian and Kvarner specialities, such as smoked ham and regional cheeses.
