Karlobag

Karlobag is a small coastal town in the Lika-Senj County of Croatia, set at the foot of the Velebit mountain range and facing the island of Pag across the Velebit Channel. This historic fishing village once served as a trading link between the coastal region and the mountainous hinterland, particularly for the salt trade. Its architecture reflects successive Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influences, with a compact old centre clustered around the small harbour. The area has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, and is often affected by the bora, a strong north wind that can sweep across this stretch of coastline. Karlobag makes a convenient base for exploring Velebit Nature Park and its hiking trails, as well as for reaching the island of Pag, known for its beaches and local cheese. The surrounding landscape offers a striking contrast between sea and mountains, popular for diving, fishing and outdoor pursuits. The town itself remains modest in size, offering a quiet atmosphere away from the busier tourist hubs found elsewhere along the Dalmatian coast.
