Ugljan/Kali

Ugljan is an island in the Zadar archipelago in northern Dalmatia, linked to the city of Zadar by a regular ferry service of around twenty minutes from the port of Preko, the island's main settlement. The landscape is dominated by extensive olive groves, some centuries old, alongside rocky coves and a scattering of pebble or sandy beaches, such as the one at Kukljica. Above Preko stand the ruins of St Michael's Fortress (Sveti Mihovil), dating from the Venetian era, which offers views over the Zadar Channel and the surrounding islands. The village of Kali, on the island's eastern coast, is historically known for its fishing tradition and shipbuilding, home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the Adriatic. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, supports water-based activities including sailing, diving and fishing. The area remains quieter than Zadar itself, providing a more relaxed setting while staying within easy reach of the city thanks to frequent ferry connections.
