Sistiana-Duino-Aurisina

Sistiana-Duino-Aurisina is a municipality in Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the coast of the Gulf of Trieste, between the city of Trieste and the Slovenian border. The area alternates limestone cliffs of the Karst plateau with small bays, including Sistiana, known for its pebble beach and marina. Duino Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Adriatic, is the area's main architectural landmark; nearby begins the well-known Rilke Path, a scenic clifftop trail offering views over the sea and coastline, popular for walking and taking in the coastal landscape. The hamlet of Aurisina has historically been associated with the quarrying of local limestone, widely used in regional construction. The surrounding karst plateau is well suited to hiking and cycling, as well as visits to small wine-producing villages known for typical wines such as Vitovska and Malvasia, alongside Karst-cured ham. The region is also known for the bora, a strong, cold wind that blows from the plateau towards the sea. The proximity of Trieste, around 20 km away, makes day trips into the city straightforward.
