Grado

Grado is a small island town connected to the mainland by a bridge, located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region on the Adriatic coast. Nicknamed the “Island of the Sun”, it is known for its mild climate and long, fine sandy beach lined with a well-kept seafront promenade. The historic centre, known as Grado Vecchia, retains a traditional layout of narrow lanes, fishermen's houses and several early Christian remains, including the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia. The town is also home to well-regarded thermal spa facilities, making use of the therapeutic properties of local sand and mud, which has made it a popular wellness destination. The surrounding lagoon, stretching between Grado and Aquileia, offers an unspoilt natural setting ideal for traditional boat trips (known locally as “batela”) and birdwatching. Nearby, the archaeological site of Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds further cultural interest to the area. The more wooded Grado Pineta district is home to campsites and holiday residences set in a quiet environment. Local cuisine focuses on seafood, particularly the traditional “boreto”, a fish soup typical of the lagoon area.
