San Daniele del Friuli

San Daniele del Friuli is a small hilltop town in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, in the province of Udine, internationally known for its DOP-certified prosciutto, cured according to centuries-old methods shaped by the area's distinctive climate, influenced by both alpine and Adriatic air. The compact historic centre retains a medieval layout with cobbled lanes and a handful of notable religious buildings, including the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, home to frescoes by Pellegrino da San Daniele, a local Renaissance painter. The town also houses the Biblioteca Guarneriana, one of Italy's oldest public libraries, founded in the 15th century. From the hill, views stretch across the Friulian plain and, on clear days, towards the Alps and the Marano lagoon. Local gastronomy, centred on cured meats and regional produce, draws visitors throughout the year, particularly during the annual event celebrating the town's famous ham. San Daniele makes a convenient base for exploring the Friulian hills, nearby vineyards and neighbouring towns such as Udine, around twenty kilometres away.
