Lago di Barcis

Lake Barcis lies in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, within the Cellina Valley, on the edge of the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park. Created by a dam built across the Cellina torrent in the 20th century, this artificial lake is known for its striking turquoise waters, which stand out against the surrounding limestone cliffs and woodland. The small village of Barcis, with its colourful houses, sits along the shoreline and serves as a starting point for numerous walking trails and cycle paths that follow the lake or lead up into the Cellina gorges. In summer, swimming, canoeing and paddleboarding are popular on the water, while the surrounding area offers hiking routes into the Carnic Prealps. The region is also close to the Piancavallo ski resort, roughly thirty minutes away, allowing visitors to combine mountain and lakeside stays depending on the season. The climate is continental and mountainous, with mild summers and cool winters. The unspoilt natural setting and the quiet charm of the village make it a favoured spot for nature-based tourism, away from Italy's busier holiday resorts.
