Merano

Merano is a spa town in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), Italy, set along the Passirio river at the foot of the Alps. Its notably mild climate for an alpine region has earned it a reputation for an almost Mediterranean microclimate, allowing palm trees and vineyards to thrive close to the mountains. The town is known for its landscaped promenades dating back to the 19th century, including the Tappeiner Walk and the winter and summer riverside paths, legacies of its history as a fashionable spa resort for Austrian aristocracy. Trauttmansdorff Castle, with its acclaimed botanical gardens, is linked to the stays of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) and remains one of the area's most visited attractions. The historic centre, with its arcaded Portici/Laubengasse street, reflects the German-Italian bilingual character typical of South Tyrol. Merano is also known for its modern thermal baths, its winter Christmas market, and its proximity to the Val Venosta and Val Passiria valleys, gateways to the Texel Group nature park. The surrounding region produces apples and local wines, celebrated at an autumn wine festival.
