Dunkeld

Dunkeld is a small town in Perthshire, Scotland, set on the banks of the River Tay at the gateway to the Highlands. It is known for its part-ruined medieval cathedral, sections of which remain in use for worship, and for its Little Houses, 17th-century dwellings rebuilt after the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 and now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Nearby, Birnam Wood recalls Shakespeare's Macbeth, while The Hermitage woodland offers riverside walks along the Braan, home to the Georgian folly Ossian's Hall and some of Britain's tallest Douglas fir trees. The River Tay is well regarded for salmon fishing. The surrounding area, known as Highland Perthshire, provides good opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting amid wooded hills and classic Scottish scenery. Dunkeld therefore serves as a convenient base for exploring this part of central Scotland, combining historical heritage with unspoilt natural surroundings.
