Royan

Royan, in the Charente-Maritime department, is a seaside resort on the Gironde estuary known for its distinctive architecture, rebuilt after the town was destroyed in 1945. The rebuilding produced a striking example of 1950s-60s urban design, exemplified by the Notre-Dame church, designed by Guillaume Gillet with concrete and coloured stained glass, and the Palais des Congrès. The seafront is arranged around several coves, including the Grande Conche and Conche de Pontaillac, offering wide sandy beaches suited to swimming and watersports. The marina and covered market bring life to the town centre, while the surrounding area offers a range of activities, including La Palmyre Zoo, nearby Cognac vineyards, and boat trips along the estuary towards the Cordouan lighthouse. Local cuisine centres on oysters from Marennes-Oléron and other seafood specialities. Royan also serves as a convenient base for exploring the Atlantic coast, including the villages of Talmont-sur-Gironde and Vaux-sur-Mer, set within a mild oceanic climate.
