St-Joseph

Saint-Joseph lies on the southern coast of Réunion Island, in an area often referred to as the "Wild South" for its unspoilt volcanic scenery and rugged coastline shaped by the Indian Ocean. The town is crossed by the Rivière des Remparts and the Langevin ravine, home to the well-known Grand Galet waterfall, reached via a trail through dense tropical vegetation. The natural pool at Manapany-les-Bains, sheltered by basalt rocks, provides a safe spot for sea bathing. The upland areas, particularly around Grand Coude, are known for chayote cultivation and offer sweeping views over the coastline and ocean. The local economy remains closely tied to agriculture, with lychees, vanilla and sugar cane among the key crops. The humid tropical climate, more pronounced here than elsewhere on the island, supports lush, dense vegetation.
