Vence

Vence is a town in the Alpes-Maritimes department, perched on a hilltop some fifteen kilometres from Nice and the Mediterranean coast. Its historic centre, encircled by medieval ramparts, features a cathedral, cobbled lanes and the Place du Peyra with its fountain, where a Provençal market takes place. The town is best known for the Chapelle du Rosaire, designed by Henri Matisse in the 1940s, a testament to the strong ties many artists had with the area, alongside Dubuffet and Chagall who also spent time here. Vence enjoys a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude, making summers noticeably cooler than along the coast. The surrounding countryside is popular for walking, particularly towards the Col de Vence, which offers sweeping views over the Baous mountains and the Nice hinterland. The nearby fortified village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, renowned for its art galleries, adds further cultural appeal to the area. The town also offers a range of shops, restaurants and accommodation, suited both to a cultural stay and as a base for exploring the French Riviera and the Provençal hinterland.
