Mazamet

Mazamet is a town in the Tarn department, nestled at the foot of the Montagne Noire on the edge of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. The town developed during the 19th century thanks to its wool-scouring and leather-tanning industries, a heritage still visible in its architecture, with numerous bourgeois villas and former textile mills reflecting this industrious past. The town centre retains a typical South-Western French character, with shaded squares and traditional markets offering local Occitan produce. The surrounding countryside provides varied scenery, from wooded hills and hiking trails leading into the Montagne Noire to the nearby Sidobre area, renowned for its granite rock formations. The climate, influenced by both Mediterranean and Atlantic weather patterns, allows for outdoor pursuits for much of the year. Mazamet makes a convenient base for exploring rural Tarn, combining industrial heritage, regional gastronomy and mid-mountain landscapes, all within an authentic setting well away from the main tourist routes.
