Mercuès

Mercuès is a village in the Lot department, a few kilometres north-west of Cahors, set within the Lot valley. The village is overlooked by the Château de Mercuès, a former residence of the bishops of Cahors built on a rocky outcrop above the river and surrounding vineyards; now converted into a hotel and restaurant, it remains a striking architectural landmark in the local landscape. The area lies at the heart of the Cahors AOC wine region, known for its red wines made mainly from the Malbec grape, locally referred to as Côt. Cahors itself is only around ten minutes away by car, making it easy to visit the historic town centre and its renowned Pont Valentré, a fortified 14th-century bridge listed as part of the Way of St James pilgrimage route. The River Lot, which runs through the area, provides pleasant opportunities for walks as well as water-based activities such as canoeing and river cruises. Set among vine-covered hillsides and the limestone plateaux of the Quercy region, the surrounding countryside is typical of south-west France, valued for its tranquillity and natural heritage.
