Nazaré

Nazaré is a coastal town on Portugal's Atlantic shoreline, in the Leiria district, world-renowned for the giant waves that break at Praia do Norte, drawing professional surfers and thrill-seekers, particularly during the autumn and winter months. This phenomenon is caused by an underwater canyon that amplifies incoming swells. Beyond its surfing reputation, Nazaré retains a strong fishing-village character, evident in the historic Sítio district, perched on a clifftop and reached by a century-old funicular that offers panoramic views over the ocean and main beach. The lighthouse, near the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, doubles as a vantage point for watching record-breaking waves. The town has long relied on fishing and open-air fish drying, a tradition still visible at certain seafront stalls. The narrow streets of the centre are lined with restaurants and shops focused on seafood, particularly grilled sardines and fresh fish. With its temperate oceanic climate and long sandy beaches, Nazaré remains a popular year-round destination, combining maritime heritage with extreme water sports.
